Bye bye Gundam (RX-78-2)

What is Gundam?

Gundam is a fictional manned robot, introduced in a Japanese scientific fiction anime called Mobile Suit Gundam in 1979. There were many robot anime before Gundam, but we can say Gundam is the 1st successful robot anime that became a popular robot anime series. If you recognize RX-78-2, I assume you’re a big fan of Gundam. RX-78-2 is the first Gundam model, and its actual size statue was displayed at a shopping mall in Odaiba, Tokyo from April 2012 to March 5th 2017. Can you imagine a huge robot standing in front of a shopping mall? The height is 18 meter (about 708 inch) and it is the same height as Mazinger Z (English name is Tranzor Z) ! Thanks to the Gundam’s statue, this shopping mall became a famous sightseeing spot for tourists. I personally think it is more worth to see than the phony statue of liberty, which is also in Odaiba.

Why did they demolish the statue of Gundam RX-78-2 ?

Yes, the actual size of Gundam’s statue is no longer at the shopping mall in Odaiba unfortunately. You might think; “Oh, no~ I’ve wanted to see it in person! Why on earth did they demolish the wonderful Gundam?” I took some pictures of Gundam and Gundam café in Odaiba for you before it was demolished.

You might not be able to tell how tall the Gundam is in the above picture, but you’ll know it when you see this one.

A new Gundam is coming soon!

You couldn’t have seen RX-78-2 in person, but don’t feel let down. You’ll be able to see another Gundam soon! Bandai Namco Holdings, Bandai, Sunrise, and Sotsu announced they are planning to build a new Gundam statue at the same place by Fall 2017. Which model are they going to build? The answer is Unicorn Gundam! Are you happy or disappointed when you heard it? I heard some people say they preferred Z Gundam since it is 1 generation after RX-78-2, but why was Unicorn Gundam chosen?

Apparently, there are two reasons they decided to build Gundam Unicorn; one is that Unicorn Gundam is well known not only in Japan but also in other countries too. The other one is that the creating company believes that Unicorn Gundam can send messages; “Living in space”, “Understand with each other” and “The possibility humans have”. (Translated by Risa)

How many series of Gundam do you know or have you ever watched?

You might think I don’t have the right to write about Gundam, but I just watched some episodes of Gundam SEED just because I liked the voice actors in the anime, Soichiro Hoshi (in Kira Yamato), Akira Ishida (in Athrun Zala), Toshihiko Seki (in Rau Le Creuset), Tomokazu Seki (in Yzak Jule), Ryutaro Okiayu (in Andrew Waldfeld). Sochiro Hoshi, Akira Ishida and Toshihiko Seki are also in my favorite anime called Saiyuki(最遊記). I’d like to start watching Gundam, but which series would you recommend the most? Please let me know~!
